7 Best Handheld Games Of 2020

Most people rely on smartphone apps to pass the time, but your iPhone or Android definitely weren't built for gaming. These handheld game consoles are, and they are a great distraction. They have better battery life, actual buttons, and tons of games that can keep you occupied for hours. With four portable video game consoles on its roster, Nintendo is dominating the handheld space. Here are all the best handheld game consoles that are worth considering to keep you entertained on the go.

1. Nintendo Switch
amazon.com
$425.98

Editor's Note: The Nintendo Switch is currently experiencing supply shortages on Amazon, so check to see if it is in stock at B&H, GameStopTarget, or Walmart. You may be able to find the Animal Crossing Edition if you can't find the standard colors for purchase.

This console features a unique design that allows it to seamlessly transform from a mobile gaming device to a home game system. When you place the Switch in its dock, it automatically switches to allow gaming on the big screen.

The Switch offers entertainment in any environment, thanks to its portability and wide library of games. You can even kick back and watch Hulu on it! The console offers an extensive set of accessories as well as 5 hours of battery life, and it's available in several different color configurations. If you want to game on the go, you can't go wrong with a Switch. We won't travel without it!

2. GPD XD Plus Portable Gaming Handheld
amazon.com
$210.00

An emulator is hardware or software that lets one device behave like another. The GPD XD Plus allows you to play classic games from old consoles like the NES, SNES, PS1, or Game Boy. It's not as simple as just firing up an App Store to download the games, though.

If you're good with computers and researching things online, the GPD XD Plus is one of the best emulators you can buy — it's one of the few that's powerful and portable.

But we don't recommend it for people who dislike tweaking gadgets or following tutorials online, since you have to jump through some hoops to install ROMs (games) on the device.

3. Nintendo 2DS (Refurbished) Handheld Game Console
ebay.com
$49.99

Editor's Note: The Nintendo 2DS is currently experiencing supply shortages. Nintendo still sells refurbished units in both color configurations that are backed by a warranty on eBay, so check to see if it is in stock at Walmart if you'd prefer a new model.

The Nintendo 2DS is basically a 3DS without its hinges. It sports a wedge shape instead of the original clamshell design, but it's still comfortable to hold. Its two backlit screens are bright but are left exposed — which makes them prone to cracks and scratches.

The device plays Nintendo's extensive library of Nintendo DS and 3DS games. But it doesn't support stereo sound unless you're wearing headphones. This console definitely looks more like a toy than a serious gaming machine, making it a great device for kids to play with.

There are three variants of the 2DS. The scarlet red and electric blue versions come with the game New Super Mario Bros. 2, while the yellow and red variant comes with Super Mario Maker.

4. Apple iPod touch (7th Generation)
amazon.com
$194.95

The iPod touch is truly in a league of its own when it comes to sheer entertainment capabilities. Equipped with a 4-inch Retina touch screen, an 8 MP camera, and the best software in the business, the device can do a whole lot more than play your MP3 collection.

Thanks to its powerful chip, the iPad touch can entertain you with augmented reality apps and a slew of games from the App Store. Review editors from PCMag and TechRadar praised the gadget for offering a reasonably priced gateway to Apple's superb mobile platform, iOS.

The iPod touch has a standard audio jack, and it comes bundled with Apple's iconic EarPods. There are six color variants (pink, blue, gold, red, silver, and space gray) and three storage options to select from (32 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB). We highly suggest that you avoid the entry-level one for gaming.

5. New Nintendo 2DS XL Mario Kart 7 Bundle
gamestop.com
$149.99

The Nintendo 2DS XL offers gamers dual large screens, a comfortable-to-hold clamshell design, stereo sound, and a built-in NFC reader for amiibo (Nintendo's collectible action figures, which add in-game extras).

The console — which is available in purple and silver, orange and white, or black and turquoise — may not play 3D videos and games like the 3DS XL, but it's still compatible with Nintendo 3DS games and software for a cheaper price. It even comes with a free pre-installed game of Mario Kart 7.

6. ASUS ROG Phone II Android Smartphone
amazon.com

The ASUS ROG Phone II is tailor-made for Android gamers. The smartphone flaunts a gorgeous 6.6-inch display with an insanely smooth 120 Hz refresh rate, a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, 12 GB of RAM, a dual camera, and awesome dual front-facing speakers.

It also packs the biggest battery in the business. A TechRadar editor called the device “the ultimate gaming phone.” Some might find the design of the ROG Phone II a bit ostentatious, but its gaming performance is unlike any other phone.

7. LG G8X ThinQ Dual-Screen Smartphone
amazon.com
$699.95

The LG G8X ThinQ is one of the most standout smartphones on the market. It’s one of the first dual screen smartphones, meaning you can use one screen to play games, and the other to browse strategy guides or watch YouTube walkthroughs.

The device is powered by a massive 5,000mAh battery, so you can expect around 12 hours of playing time before it'll need to be recharged. It has excellent stereo speakers, plus a headphone jack for those times you need to be considerate for others around you.

You won't have any issues or lag playing mobile games like Asphalt 8: Airborne or Player Unknown Battle Grounds, either, thanks to its speedy Snapdragon Octa-Core processor and impressive 8 gigabytes of memory. The phone also has 128 GB of storage space — plenty for all your apps, games, movies, and music. There’s even an SD card slot for when storage space gets tight.

The phone doesn’t have any physical buttons to provide tactile feedback, but it’s comfortable to hold and makes for an excellent mobile gaming phone.

8. New Nintendo 3DS XL Portable Game Console
amazon.com
$295.00

Editor's Note: The Nintendo 3DS XL is currently experiencing supply shortages. Gamestop still has several refurbished units in several color configurations in stock.

Compared to the New Nintendo 2DS XL and the Nintendo 2DS, the 3DS XL features updated controls, face-tracking, a brighter screen, a better camera, and improved performance. However, users should be aware that there are fewer new game releases with this New Nintendo 3DS.

The new 3DS XL is available in blackSNES-stylePikachu yellow, and a limited-edition Solgaleo Lunala variant. Just make sure you purchase an AC adapter with whichever model you choose, because one isn't included.
